“How much is a solar water heater for a family of four?”
It’s one of the first things people in Coimbatore ask when the geyser bill starts to sting. The honest answer: the solar water heater price in Coimbatore ranges from about ₹12,000 to well over ₹80,000. That’s a wide range because “solar water heater” covers very different machines. Capacity, collector type, tank material and whether it’s pressurised all change the cost.
This guide breaks down 2026 prices for 100, 200 and 300 LPD systems, explains what drives the gap between a cheap and an expensive unit, and clears up the subsidy question.
Quick Answer: Solar Water Heater Prices in 2026
- In Coimbatore and across Tamil Nadu, a 100 LPD (litres per day) evacuated tube (ETC) solar water heater typically costs ₹15,000–₹25,000. A 100 LPD flat plate (FPC) model costs around ₹30,000-₹35,000.
- Larger and pressurised systems cost much more: 200 LPD FPC or pressurised units are listed at ₹60,000-₹87,000. Installation and plumbing are usually extra. There’s currently no central government subsidy for home solar water heaters, but the GST on them was cut from 12% to 5% in September 2025.
2026 Price Ranges by Capacity
These are the prices sellers in Coimbatore were listing in October 2026, plus a few national-brand listings for comparison.
| Capacity | Type | Listed price range | What it suits |
| 100 LPD | ETC, non-pressurised | ₹12,000-₹23,000 | 3-4 people, one or two bathrooms |
| 100 LPD | FPC | ₹30,000-₹33,000 | 3-4 people, hard-wearing setups |
| 150 LPD | Mostly ETC / storage | ₹22,500-₹41,000 | 4-6 people |
| 200 LPD | FPC, pressurised or premium brands | ₹60,000-₹87,000 | Larger homes, multi-floor bathrooms |
About 200 and 300 LPD ETC systems: few sellers list a clear price for a plain 200 LPD ETC unit, and almost none list 300 LPD on its own. Going by 100 and 150 LPD prices, a non-pressurised ETC system typically comes to roughly:
- 200 LPD ETC: about ₹28,000-₹45,000 (our estimate)
- 300 LPD ETC: about ₹40,000-₹65,000 (our estimate)
Treat these as budgeting figures and get a written quote, because brand, tank and stand material change the final price a lot.
Why the same capacity can cost twice as much
The lowest ₹12,000 listing for a 100 LPD system uses a GI (galvanised iron) inner tank. Most mid-range and premium systems use stainless steel (SS 304 or 316L) tanks, which resist corrosion far better. The cheapest price often means the shortest life.
What Drives Solar Water Heater Cost
| Factor | Cheaper option | Costlier option | Why it matters |
| Collector type | ETC (glass tubes) | FPC (copper/metal plate) | FPC is sturdier but costs more per litre |
| Inner tank | GI / mild steel | SS 304 / SS 316L | Decides how long the tank survives hot water and hard water |
| Pressure | Non-pressurised | Pressurised | Pressurised works with pressure pumps and upper floors |
| Capacity | 100 LPD | 200-300 LPD | Price rises with size, though not perfectly in step |
| Installation | Simple roof, short piping | Long pipe runs, extra stand height | Adds ₹2,000–₹6,000 or more |
| Electric backup | Not included | Included | Useful on rainy days, often sold separately |
ETC vs FPC in one line
ETC uses vacuum glass tubes. It’s cheaper, works well in Coimbatore’s climate, and copes better with hard water. FPC uses a metal plate with copper tubes. It costs more and is tougher against physical damage, but its narrow tubes can clog with scale if your water is hard.

Pressurised or Non-Pressurised: Which Do You Need?
This choice changes the price more than most people expect, so settle it before comparing quotes.
| Your home | What you need | Why |
| Overhead tank sits clearly above the roof where the heater goes | Non-pressurised | Water flows by gravity. Cheapest and simplest. |
| You use a pressure pump for showers | Pressurised | Pump pressure can damage a non-pressurised tank. |
| Bathrooms on a floor at or above the heater’s level | Pressurised | Gravity alone won’t push water up to them. |
| Apartment terrace shared with other units | Check with your association first | Roof access and tank height decide what’s possible. |
Most independent houses in Coimbatore with a terrace overhead tank can use a non-pressurised system, which keeps the price in the lower ranges above. If you use a pressure pump, budget for a pressurised model from the start. Fitting the cheaper type and then adding workarounds usually ends in leaks.

How to Choose the Right Capacity
Buying too big wastes money, and buying too small means cold water by the third bath. A simple way to size it:
- Count the people who bathe with hot water every day. Many Coimbatore families only use hot water in the morning, or only in the cooler months.
- Allow roughly 25–30 litres of hot water per person per day.
- Add a margin if you also want hot water for the kitchen or washing machine.
| Family size | Suggested capacity |
| 2–3 people | 100 LPD |
| 4–5 people | 150 LPD |
| 5–7 people | 200 LPD |
| Large joint family / homestay | 300 LPD |
For most Coimbatore homes with 3-4 people, 100 LPD is enough. Move up to 150 or 200 LPD only if more people bathe in the evening too, or if the system feeds more than two bathrooms.
Is There a Subsidy for Solar Water Heaters in Tamil Nadu?
This is where many buyers get confused, because solar subsidies are in the news so often.
As of 2026, there’s no central government subsidy for residential solar water heaters. The PM Surya Ghar scheme’s ₹78,000 subsidy, and Tamil Nadu’s new state top-up under G.O. 102, apply only to rooftop solar power (PV) systems that generate electricity. They don’t cover solar water heaters.
What has changed in your favour:
- GST cut: the GST Council cut GST on solar water heating systems from 12% to 5%, effective 22 September 2025. On a ₹30,000 system, that’s a real saving built into today’s prices.
- Check locally: state nodal agencies have offered rebates or soft loans in the past. Ask TEDA (Tamil Nadu Energy Development Agency) whether anything is running before you buy. Don’t let a seller promise a “government subsidy” without showing you the scheme in writing.
If you also want to cut your main electricity bill, a rooftop solar power system is the one that qualifies for subsidy.

How Much Will It Save?
A government estimate from HAREDA (Haryana’s renewable energy agency) puts the savings from a 100-litre solar water heater at about 1,500 units of electricity a year, compared with heating the same water electrically. That assumes the full capacity is used every day.
In Coimbatore, real savings are usually lower than that figure, for good reasons:
- The climate is mild, so many families don’t need hot water every day of the year.
- Some households only use hot water in the morning.
A worked example (illustrative): say your geyser currently uses 3 units a day for 10 months a year. That’s about 900 units a year. At an assumed ₹6 per unit, that’s ₹5,400 a year. A ₹20,000 ETC system would then pay for itself in under four years, and solar water heaters typically last 15–25 years.
Your own figure depends on how much hot water you use and your electricity slab. If you’re in a higher slab, each unit saved is worth more.

Things to Check Before You Buy
These are the questions that separate a 20-year system from one that leaks in year three:
- Tank material and thickness. Ask for SS 304 or SS 316L in writing. Avoid GI tanks unless the budget really doesn’t allow anything else.
- Your water quality. Coimbatore has many borewell connections with hard water. If yours is hard, prefer ETC, or plan for a softener or regular descaling.
- Overhead tank height. Non-pressurised systems need the overhead water tank to sit higher than the solar heater. If it doesn’t, you need a pressurised model.
- Roof space and shade. Collectors should face south, without shadow from water tanks or neighbouring buildings between roughly 9 am and 4 pm.
- Warranty split. Check the separate warranty on the tank, the tubes or collector, and the stand. A long tank warranty means little if tubes aren’t covered.
- Piping run. Long pipes lose heat. Insulated pipes and a short route to the bathroom make a noticeable difference.
- After-sales service. Glass tubes can break and scaling needs cleaning. Buy from someone who will still answer the phone in five years.

Common Problems and How to Avoid Them
Most solar water heater complaints come from three things: hard-water scaling, broken glass tubes, and poor installation (wrong angle, uninsulated pipes, tank lower than needed). Choosing the right type for your water and a careful installer prevents most of them.

Conclusion
For most Coimbatore homes, a 100 LPD ETC solar water heater with a stainless steel tank, costing about ₹15,000–₹25,000, is the sensible starting point. Size up only if your family’s hot water use really needs it. Choose FPC or pressurised models only when your water, roof or plumbing calls for them. There’s no subsidy to wait for, and the 2025 GST cut has already brought prices down.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
What is the price of a 100 LPD solar water heater in Coimbatore?
Around ₹15,000–₹25,000 for a non-pressurised ETC model with a decent tank. FPC models cost about ₹30,000–₹35,000. Installation is usually extra.
-
Is a 100 LPD solar water heater enough for 4 people?
Usually yes, if hot water is mainly used for morning baths. If several people bathe in the evening too, or you’re feeding more than two bathrooms, 150 LPD is safer.
-
Does a solar water heater work in Coimbatore’s rainy season?
It works less well on heavy cloud cover. That’s why many buyers add an electric backup element, which only switches on when needed.
-
Do solar water heaters need maintenance?
Light maintenance: descale every year or two in hard-water areas, check tubes for cracks, and keep the collector clean. A well-installed system needs very little else.
-
Can I use a solar water heater with a pressure pump?
Only a pressurised system. A non-pressurised one can be damaged by pump pressure, so tell your installer if you use one.
