What is PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana?
Launched on February 13, 2024, the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana is a central government initiative with a budget outlay of over ₹75,000 crore. The goal is to install rooftop solar panels in 1 crore Indian households and give them up to 300 units of free electricity every month. Eligible families also receive a direct subsidy of up to ₹78,000 depending on the system size.
The scheme is managed through a centralized national portal pmsuryaghar.gov.in and all applications are processed through your local electricity distribution company (DISCOM).
PM Surya Ghar 2.0 vs 1.0: What’s Actually Different?
If you’ve seen headlines about “PM Surya Ghar 2.0,” here’s the honest picture:
it’s not officially launched. As of now, it remains under discussion at the ministry level the scheme currently live, processing applications, and paying out subsidies is still the original PM Surya Ghar (what we’re calling “1.0” here for clarity).
That said, it’s worth knowing what’s being proposed, so you’re not caught off guard by rumors or delaying your own application while waiting for something unconfirmed.
| PM Surya Ghar (Current, Live) | PM Surya Ghar 2.0 (Proposed, Not Live) | |
|---|---|---|
| Status | Live and processing applications | Under ministry-level discussion only |
| Subsidy structure | Flat, capacity-based (up to ₹78,000) | Proposed shift toward performance-based incentives tied to actual generation |
| Battery storage | Permitted but not subsidized | Proposed separate financial support for battery storage |
| Eligibility | Individual homeowners with a rooftop | Proposed expansion to apartment residents and low-income households via shared community solar |
| Tracking | Manual application dashboard | Proposed “digital solar passport” for real-time output and service history |
None of the PM Surya Ghar 2.0 proposals are confirmed policy, and there’s no announced timeline for when or if they’ll take effect. If you’re eligible for the subsidy today, applying under the current scheme is the more reliable path than waiting for changes that may take months or years to materialize, if they happen at all.

Got a Rectification Request? What It Means and How to Clear It
If your application shows a defect or rectification request after installation, don’t panic. It doesn’t mean your subsidy is rejected. It means an inspector found something that has to be fixed and proven before the application can move forward.
What a rectification request is
After your system is installed, MNRE arranges third-party field quality inspections (FQI) on a sample of PM Surya Ghar installations. If the inspector finds a problem, a defect is raised against your application. It’s assigned to your vendor (installer), not to you.
Typical things inspectors flag include:
- Installation issues, such as earthing, cabling or the mounting structure
- Missing paperwork you should have received, such as:
- an O&M manual covering the plant’s main components
- OEM warranty documents showing the serial numbers of your panels and inverter
- a system warranty covering 5 years from commissioning
Who uploads the proof
Your vendor does, not you. Under MNRE’s October 2026 guidance, vendors upload rectification proof from their Vendor Main login, in the FQI Defect module. They have 15 days to fix the defects and upload the evidence.
You won’t find an upload option in your consumer login for this. If you see a defect or rectification status, the fastest fix is to call your installer.
What you need to do
- Call your installer as soon as you see the request. The 15-day window is short, and installers handle many applications at once.
- Ask which defects were raised. The full defect list shows in the vendor’s login, so ask them to share it with you.
- Let them fix the issue at your site, then check the work yourself.
- Make sure you’ve received your documents: the O&M manual, OEM warranties with serial numbers, and the 5-year system warranty.
- Sign the declaration only after the work is done. The portal generates a declaration. The vendor prints it on their letterhead, signs and stamps it, and you countersign it to confirm the rectification.
- Follow up until your status moves. If the installer doesn’t respond, raise a complaint through the portal or call the PM Surya Ghar helpline on 15555.
What the vendor must upload (share this with your installer)
| Proof | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Photos of the corrected work | Geo-tagged and time-stamped |
| Inverter generation reading | If the inverter display doesn’t show cumulative generation, upload a geo-tagged photo from the inverter’s mobile app showing cumulative generation and the inverter serial number |
| Status of each defect | Tick the rectification status box for every defect, add remarks and attach proof |
| Declaration | Portal-generated, printed on vendor letterhead, signed and stamped by the vendor, countersigned by the consumer |
| File format | Single extension only (e.g. .pdf). File names with letters, numbers and underscores only. Double extensions are rejected |
| “Malicious PDF File” error | Recreate the PDF with Adobe Acrobat or Microsoft Print to PDF and upload it again |
Two things the portal won’t accept as proof:
- The MNRE undertaking for repeated serial number applications. Use the portal-generated declaration instead.
- Photos of documents being handed to the consumer. Upload PDF copies of the documents.
A rectification request means an inspector found a defect after installation. Your installer has 15 days to fix it and upload geo-tagged photo proof and a declaration signed by both of you, from their vendor login. Your job is to get them moving, check the fix, and countersign the declaration.
MNRE hasn’t published what happens if the 15-day deadline is missed. Treat it as a hard deadline. An open defect can hold your application at this stage.
PM Surya Ghar Consumer Registration
Haven’t applied yet? – Registration takes about 10 minutes if your documents are ready:
- Visit pmsuryaghar.gov.in and click “Apply for Rooftop Solar”
- Register with your mobile number you’ll receive an OTP for verification
- Enter your state, DISCOM, and electricity consumer number
- Fill in personal details name, address, and contact information
- Upload your latest electricity bill and Aadhaar
- Submit you’ll get an application ID to track your status going forward
Keep your consumer number handy exactly as it appears on your electricity bill a mismatch here is one of the most common reasons feasibility checks get stuck (more on this below).
What Each PM Surya Ghar Status Means (and What to Do If You’re Stuck)
Find the status shown on your consumer dashboard below. Each row tells you who needs to act next and what you can do if nothing has changed for a while. The exact wording can vary slightly between DISCOMs.
| Status on your dashboard | What it means | Who acts next | If it’s stuck, do this |
|---|---|---|---|
| Application submitted | The portal has your application | DISCOM | Wait for the feasibility check. Make sure your consumer number matches your electricity bill exactly |
| Feasibility pending | DISCOM is checking your connection and transformer capacity | DISCOM | After 15 – 30 days, contact your DISCOM section office. Transformer capacity is a common hold-up |
| Feasibility approved / Vendor selection pending | Approved. You now need to pick a registered vendor | You | Select a vendor on the portal. Many applications stall here because people miss this step |
| Installation pending | Vendor selected, system not yet installed | Vendor | Ask your vendor for an installation date |
| Installation details submitted | Vendor has uploaded installation details | DISCOM | Wait for the DISCOM inspection to be scheduled. Follow up with your section office if it takes weeks |
| Inspection scheduled / Net meter pending | DISCOM inspection and bi-directional meter installation | DISCOM | Metro areas often have net meter backlogs. Follow up with your DISCOM, with your application number ready |
| Commissioning certificate issued | Final technical sign-off done | – | Check that your bank details are correct and Aadhaar-linked |
| Defect raised / Rectification requested | A quality inspection found something to fix | Vendor | See “Got a Rectification Request?” above. Your vendor has 15 days |
| Subsidy request submitted / Subsidy processing | Your subsidy claim is being processed | MNRE / bank | Subsidy is usually credited within 30 working days. If it’s late, check bank Aadhaar linking first |
| Subsidy credited | Paid to your bank account by DBT | – | Done. Check your bank statement |
| Application rejected / Returned | Something didn’t match or was missing | You | Read the remark on your dashboard, correct it, and reapply or resubmit. Mismatched consumer numbers and blurry documents are the usual causes |
Your dashboard status tells you who has to act next. If it’s “Vendor selection pending” or “Rejected/Returned”, the next step is yours. For “Feasibility” and “Net meter” statuses, it’s your DISCOM. For “Rectification requested”, it’s your vendor.

Documents Required for Solar Subsidy in India
This is where most applications get stuck. Having the right documents ready before you apply saves weeks of back-and-forth.
Here is the complete list of documents required for the PM Surya Ghar solar subsidy:
| Document | Purpose |
| Aadhaar Card | Identity proof mandatory for DBT subsidy transfer |
| Recent electricity bill | Confirms your consumer number and connection type |
| Bank account passbook / cancelled cheque | Required for direct benefit transfer of the subsidy amount |
| Passport-size photograph | Application identity requirement |
| Address proof | Voter ID, ration card, or utility bill showing residential address |
| Property ownership proof | Sale deed, property tax receipt, or NOC from owner if rented |
| Mobile number (linked to Aadhaar) | OTP verification and portal registration |
| Email ID | Portal registration and communication |
Pro Tip: Make sure your bank account is linked to your Aadhaar before applying. The subsidy is transferred via Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) and an unlinked account will delay your payment by weeks.

Took a Solar Loan? Check Your Loan Status on JanSamarth
If you applied for a PM Surya Ghar solar loan, track it separately from your subsidy. Loan applications under the scheme run through the government’s JanSamarth portal, which is linked to PM Surya Ghar. Many banks also accept applications at their branches.
To check your loan status:
- Go to jansamarth.in and log in with the mobile number you used to apply.
- Open “My Applications” on your dashboard.
- Your loan application and its current status will show there.
If you applied at a bank branch rather than through JanSamarth, ask the branch for your status. Have your PM Surya Ghar application number ready, because banks often verify it against your DISCOM status before they pay out.
For bank-by-bank rates and terms, see our guide on choosing a solar loan bank.
Common Reasons Applications Get Delayed
From experience guiding applicants through this process, these are the top reasons people wait months without an update:
- Incomplete documents: Missing bank Aadhaar linkage or uploading blurry scans
- Pending vendor selection: Many applicants get feasibility approval but forget to pick a registered DISCOM vendor on the portal
- Net metering delay: DISCOM backlogs for bi-directional meter installation are common in metro areas
- Incorrect consumer number: A mismatch between your portal registration and your electricity bill stalls feasibility checks
- Site inspection not scheduled: In some areas, applicants need to actively follow up with their DISCOM office to schedule the inspection
If your status hasn’t changed in 3 – 4 weeks: Log in to the portal, identify which stage is stuck, and contact your DISCOM directly. You can also call the 15555 PM Surya Ghar Helpline Number to raise a complaint.
Note: What “pending” actually means: A pending status isn’t a rejection it usually means your inspection, vendor coordination, or net-meter step hasn’t been completed yet. Applications generally stay active as long as documents and next steps are submitted on time.
