SCM Garments Pvt Ltd
Overview
SCM Garments Pvt Ltd, one of Tirupur’s leading knitwear exporters, has installed a 2.2 MW rooftop solar power system across its manufacturing facilities to meet a major share of its factory’s daily energy needs. Known for large-scale garment production and exports to global markets, SCM Garments made this investment as part of a long-term commitment to sustainable and cost-efficient operations.
Execution
SCM Garments has consistently led in sustainable manufacturing from water recycling to wind energy adoption. Solar was the natural next step. The 2.2 MW system was deployed across multiple factory rooftops using high-efficiency solar panels paired with industrial-grade inverters, carefully engineered to handle the large power demands of a round-the-clock garment production unit.
The installation spanned several rooftop blocks, requiring careful structural assessment, cable routing across buildings, and synchronization with the factory’s existing HT/LT power infrastructure. The system is fully grid-tied, with real-time monitoring dashboards installed at the facility to track live generation, consumption, and performance metrics ensuring zero disruption to production while maximizing solar yield.

Result
- Lower Electricity Costs: The solar plant generates approximately 28–30 lakh units (kWh) per year, supplying a significant share of the factory’s daily power and cutting electricity bills by around 20% annually.
- Carbon Emission Savings: The system prevents nearly 2,600 tonnes of CO₂ emissions every year equivalent to planting over 1,00,000 trees.
- Reliable Performance Across Multiple Rooftops: Designed for uninterrupted operations, the multi-rooftop setup ensures consistent generation even during partial shading or maintenance on individual blocks.
- Smart Monitoring: Real-time dashboards track string-level performance, generation vs. expectation, and fault alerts enabling the team to proactively maintain efficiency.
- Stronger Asset & Brand Value: By adopting renewable energy at this scale, SCM Garments reduces long-term operating costs, lowers dependency on grid fluctuations, and reinforces its green credentials with international buyers who prioritize eco-responsible supply chains.
What types of rooftop solar systems are available for homes in India, and is government subsidy available?
There are three types of rooftop solar systems for homes:
- On-Grid (connected to the utility grid, ideal for areas with stable power supply),
- Hybrid (combines grid and battery backup for uninterrupted power), and
- Off-Grid (fully battery-based, best for remote areas).
The Indian government offers subsidy under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana – up to ₹78,000 for systems up to 3 kW. Kondaas Automation handles everything from site survey and design to installation and subsidy documentation, making the entire process hassle-free for homeowners across Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
